SAE Graduate Brings (and Adjusts) the Noise for Top Rappers

Having just graduated from SAE institute in L.A. in September 2012, Andrew Law already has a flourishing career as a rap and hip-hop audio engineer. His quick success can be attributed to his hard work and serious focus that he had as an SAE student.

SAE prepared me for the job market exceptionally well, says Andrew. I spent many hours in the schools studio practicing and asking the instructors any questions, big or small, and they were able to give me the help, guidance, and advice that I needed.

Andrew grew up playing piano and guitar in a musical family in Provo, Utah. Though he would say that his genre specialty is rock and anything instrument-based, professionally his work is leaning toward hip-hop and rap.

I work out of Daddys House Recording Studio, which is Diddys private studio in Los Angeles, says Andrew. I was hired by Matt Testa, Diddys chief engineer and mixer as well an SAE grad, who was looking for an assistant. Since I started working for Matt, Im doing prep work on recording sessions, tuning vocals, setting up pre-mix sessions, and working with writers who are coming up with material for artists that Matt with be working with in the future.

Projects that Andrew has been involved with include mixtapes for the rappers Los, Cassie, and French Montana (all on Bad Boy, Diddys label); a mixtape project for Short Dawg/Elvis Freshly (signed to Lil Waynes Young Money Records); and a variety of P.Diddy features.

Andrew sees the video game industry as a big growth area where SAE grads can potentially establish careers.

I see many openings for SAE grads in the gaming world, Andrew says. There are also jobs for multi-qualified individuals who can work on video and sound combined.

In terms of advice for current SAE students who are looking to leverage their schooling into a full-time career, Andrew recommends taking their education at the school seriously.

Spend as much time at school as possible, explains Andrew. Learn everything you can, test out anything you can get your hands on, meet as many people as possible so you can take advantage of SAEs amazing network of alumni, and most of all, be nice. People like to work with people who are easy to get along with.
