Athletic Quest Discovers Four Reasons to Ask for Help

There are times in the lives of student athletes when they need help beyond sports coaching and academic counseling. Knowing where and when to turn for help is a key to the success of many student athletes. That help may come from off the playing field as well as on.

Our coaches oftentimes play the role of mentor, says Coach John Scott, president and CEO of Athletic Quest, an expert team of current and former coaches. Their process involves weaving together a relationship between student athlete, parents, and Athletic Quest coaches oftentimes over the course of years. This relationship supports the entire family through trust and a connection that never takes a day off, continues Coach Scott. In addition to one-on-one mentoring with the student athlete, the coach frequently helps the family prioritize goals and make choices.

The student athlete and his/her family can request life mentoring suggestions from Athletic Quest coaches including athletic, academic, and ethical advice.

1. Low grades and poor academic performance? Ask for help.
Of the nine evaluation criteria established by Athletic Quest to assess a student athletes competitive level, four are academic and five are athletic. The importance of academics is obvious. Athletic Quest has even consulted with academic professionals and developed its own unique program for accelerating study skills and elevating grades.

Robert Turbin, now a rookie with the Seattle Seahawks, had to raise the bar academically to qualify for NCAA Division I. We worked closely with him starting at the end of his high school sophomore year, specifically on study habits and how to best prepare for SAT and ACT tests. To his credit, he was diligent and worked hard when he realized how academics impacted his athletic possibilities, reports Coach Scott. Robert received a full athletic scholarship to Utah State. He graduated and is now playing in the NFL.

2. When in trouble with moral issues, ask for help.
Life has lots of lessons, states Coach Scott, and some of the greatest outcomes involve painful processes. We urge our student athletes to ask for help when it comes to moral character, integrity, and citizenship duties.

We worked with a varsity high school student athlete involved in a hazing incident as a participator, not the victim. He was expelled permanently from his high school and transferred to another school as a sophomore. He had to sit out his junior year as an athlete due to transfer rules, explains Coach Scott. We spent a great deal of time determining how to approach this situation and how to best counsel this young man. We had him write a letter of apology to the hazing victim, the school, state athletic association, and his new school. Together we addressed what his moral goals were for moving forward as a young man. In his new school, even though he could not play sports for the next year, he set target goals, wanting to be a good example on and off the practice field. His objective is to be helpful with teammates and classmates, especially those less popular. The response hes getting from the new schools coaches and administrators has been overwhelmingly positive.

3. When puzzled about recruitment and scholarship strategy, ask for help.
Lauren Clayful attended the smallest high school in Kauai which makes her as far away as possible from mainland college sports. Lauren was a high school all-league junior, but had not heard from any college coaches. She was 61 and a NCAA Division III athlete. But heres the problem. No one knew she was out there. We helped get Lauren ready for college recruiting by mentoring her through this process, comments Coach Scott. She was off the charts academically and scored so high on ACTs and SATs that it placed her in the top 2%. As we guided Lauren through this journey, she went from hearing from zero college coaches to being recruited by 198.

Lauren attended Williams College, a Division III school and there are no athletic scholarships in that division. But towards a cost of $65,000 a year, with help from her Athletic Quest mentors, she received $52,000 without any athletic money. She asked Athletic Quest for help during her entire college term, and they are getting more funding for her sophomore year. When tryouts rolled around for the second year, however, she found herself struggling at the higher level of competition. After a 90-minute conversation with her Athletic Quest mentor, Lauren went from struggling to within a month playing significant finish for a Division III college program. The relationship isnt over; states Coach Scott, were with her for the rest of her college career.

4. Impacted by depression and bullying? Ask for help.
Athletic Quest coaches mentored another young man who went through a hazing incident as a junior. He was a successful, legitimate player. During captain practices in baseball several seniors would throw balls at him, belittle him and make fun of him. He was just on the verge of being on suicide watch, says Coach Scott. Because we were in constant contact with this young man, we knew what was wrong. Our mentor coach called the team captain and said, We have a problem. Is this the kind of captain and leader you are? Do you think this behavior is acceptable from your team? He responded by saying that he and another captain would hold a team meeting without the coaches. In the meeting they explained that anyone who belittles, incites, makes fun of, or is derogatory towards any other team member will not be tolerated, and that we as captains will insure that youll be thrown off the team. In a very short time there has been a total turnaround in the environment for that once-hazed student athlete and for the entire team.

We recognize that our Life Mentoring responsibilities include helping the student athlete become a solid, principled citizen within the athletic world, and within life in general, says Coach Scott.

Athletic Quest can be contacted by visiting http://www.AthleticQuest.net or by calling 888.803.5157. Call Athletic Quest for a free evaluation ($50.00 value) or to visit with a college coach recruiter.

Hacero Launches Online Recruiting Avenue for Softare Services

As far as the young guys over at Hacero Labs a new startup hailing out of Stanford Univeristy, California are concerned, building world-class software that best meets the needs of its diverse clientele around the globe is all that there is. Or should be.

To address an overwhelming demand for its services in recent months, Hacero launched an online recruitment and team management portal on its site last week for opening its doors to overseas talent. We are at a crossroads where expansion is of immediate necessity, points out company co-founder Adi Singh. In the past couple of weeks, Singh explains. we have had to decline a number of clients almost 80% of those approaching us, just so my team can keep up with the remaining 20% that we select as clients. With a larger technical base, I'm sure we can push that acceptance rate up to 50% in the coming months.
The company, with its aim to offer programmers worldwide a fair and equal opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a variety of software fields, started its online recruitment procedure for offshore talent on 15th April, coinciding it with the team's 15th project acceptance just this quarter.

A huge market exists for skilled coders, but not everyone has the resources necessary to reap the economic benefits of their talent, Singh points out. Hacero is a firm that is dedicated to bringing forth the talent of these budding programmers. And now armed with its online management portal, Hacero management seems certain of being capable of handling the entire project development process with offshore team-members online.

Hired programmers will be able to view available orders on Hacero's boards, and sign up for any project which best suit their skills, schedule and interests. As is emphasized by the company's administration, employees can sign up for projects as and when they wish, which in turn gives them immense flexibility in prioritizing and deciding how much they want to work and earn in a given period of time.

A quick word with the coders working at Hacero show them to be a group of extremely talented and passionate techies; each an expert in his or her own field of interest. And through a unique system of ranks, medals and recognition, the management at Hacero encourages efficiency and healthy competition amongst its programmers.

If you have a flair for coding, if you are unsatisfied with your job and income, or if you are willing to put your programming skills to test, then joining Team Hacero might just be the right move for you! It is where you get to take charge of your professional life and find your dream coding job.

As a manager at Hacero proudly proclaims, "We expect out writers to demonstrate through their work that they understand the three core company values of Integrity, Punctuality, and Dedication. That is basically all that we ask of our writers. As long as this code of conduct is followed, the rest falls into place without much effort."

This is a place that can expand your mind, improve your social status, and broaden your opportunities- all in one stroke!

VRAP Extension Letter Released by the Department of Veteran Affairs

If you already have a certificate of eligibility, but have not used it, the VA has issued a memo to you from Curtis L Coy who is the Deputy Under Secretary for Economic Development.

The Memo is included at the bottom of this page, i will provide you a short summary:

Basically, here is what they are saying:

1) The original end date to enroll using VRAP was March 31st, 2013. This date has passed, and is being extended until March 31st, 2014 OR until 99,000 veterans have enrolled in school, and begun to receive VRAP benefits.
2) This means that even if you have a certificate of eligibility, you are not guaranteed benefits until you are actually using them.
3) This also means those of you who did not apply and get approved, now have a chance to become eligible to use VRAP Veterans Retraining Assistance Program. Learn more about VRAP by visiting: http://www.acot.edu/vrap

What you need to do?

Dont wait, Apply Now to ensure you are able to use your benefit. This means that you cannot afford to wait for community colleges and their schedules. Schools like American College of Technology, that are 100% online, VRAP friendly and have starts monthly are a better for you and your benefit.

For those of you that have not yet applied for VRAP, do it now and to speed up the process, know the school you want to go to prior to sighing up for VRAP.

If you do not want to use vrap and you were already approved, visit the VA website at http://benefits.va.gov/vow/education.htm and withdraw from VRAP to allow another veteran to take advantage of the benefit.

Below is a copy of the letter issues on Friday April 12th.

Dear Veterans,

According to our records as of April 1st, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) issued you a Certificate of Eligibility for VRAP but you are not currently receiving benefits.

What you should know:

A Certificate of Eligibility is NOT a guarantee of benefit payments. By law, VRAP benefits can only be paid to a maximum of 99,000 Veterans. As of April 1, 2013, VA issued over 93,000 Certificatesn of Eligibility and may continue to issue them through October 1, 2013. As of April 1st, approximately 40,000 Veteras had enrolled in training.

VRAP benefits will be paid on a first-come, first-served basis until the program ends on March 31, 2014 -OR- until 99,000 Veterans have enrolled in school and received VRAP benefits. This means that under current law, if you do not enroll in training before March 31, 2014 OR if you do not enroll in training before VRAP benefits have been paid to the maximum 99,000 Veterans, VA will be unable to pay you VRAP benefits even if you enroll in training.

What you should do:

If you plan on using your VRAP benefit, you should first check with VA to ensure there are available slots remaining. You can verify the number of students enrolled in training online at http://benefits.va.gov/vow/education.htm , or by calling VA at 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551).

Once you enroll in an approved program, please contact your schools Veterans certifying official immediately so that your enrollment can be verified with VA as soon as possible. You will receive additional correspondence from VA after we receive your enrollment information from your school.

How you will receive payment:

Monthly VRAP benefit payments are paid in arrears. For example, if you begin training in August, you will receive your payment for August at the beginning of September. You will be paid via direct deposit.

Can you receive payment sooner?

You may be eligible for an advance payment for the first month (or part of a month) and second full month of your enrollment IF:

Your school has agreed to receive and process advance payments, and
You request advance payment by notifying your school certifying official, and
VA receives your enrollment certification at least 30 days before classes start.

Note: Advance payments are issued via written check directly to your school on your behalf.

If you do not plan to use VRAP:

Its helpful for VA to know if you do not plan on using your benefits so we have an estimate of approximately how many people will be enrolling. To withdraw from VRAP, please visit the VRAP website and follow the instructions under the Withdraw from VRAP link.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, please call us at 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) or contact us through the internet at https://gibill.custhelp.com . You can also view a list of frequently asked questions about VRAP on our website at http://benefits.va.gov/vow/education.htm

I hope that you find this information useful, and I wish you continued success in your educational and employment endeavors.

Sincerely,
Curtis L. Coy

'Must-Have' Skills for Government Professionals Detailed at AMA Government Conference

Dr. Haywood Spangler, co-developer of AMA Enterprise's Critical Thinking for Government seminar, discussed techniques for developing critical thinking skills at an AMA Enterprise Government Solutions briefing for government HR and Training and Development professionals yesterday.

The conference, titled 'Sharpening the Critical Thinking Skills of Government Leaders,' drew Federal, military, and some state and local HR and Training and Development professionals, and focused on providing attendees with the tools they need to develop the critical thinking skills necessary to tackle the unique challenges facing government today.

Quoting David A. Garvin of Harvard Business School from a recent New York Times article, Dr. Spangler noted that "Leaders need to think critically...People need to sharpen their thinking skills, whether it's questioning assumptions or looking at problems from multiple points of view."

During the conference, attendees discussed the Watson-GlaserTM Critical Thinking Appraisal, which is the most respected assessment of individual critical thinking skills. Dr. Spangler also facilitated an interactive exercise with attendees, providing a sample of AMA Enterprise's Critical Thinking for Government seminar. Participants completed a role-playing exercise to help determine how they should implement critical thinking skills in a real-life work situation.

"We were thrilled with the government attendance - the standing-room only conference was an indicator of how seriously government professionals are taking the call to sharpen their critical thinking skills," said Sam Davis, Vice President, AMA Enterprise Government Solutions. "Dr. Spangler's presentation reinforced the fact that training in this area is crucial to helping government organizations retain the professionals they need to stay strong and viable."

Appalachian Trail Conservancy Announces South Mountain Partnership Mini-Grant 2013 Application Process

The South Mountain Partnership Mini-Grant program, administered by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), is currently accepting applications for the 2013 grant round until July 31, 2013. Since its inception in 2009, the Mini-Grant program has funded 28 projects throughout the South Mountain landscape in south-central Pennsylvania and has awarded $188,000 in funding to support these projects, an investment that has leveraged an additional $450,000 in matching funding.

The program is designed to stimulate projects that sustain south-central Pennsylvania's sense of place by protecting, promoting, and building upon natural, cultural, recreational, and agricultural resources. In particular, the program targets investments in projects that have significant ties to the assets of South Mountain, the working lands that surround the mountain and the communities tied to both.

"The Partnership prides itself on creating an inclusive conversation about the future of where we live," stated Jonathan Peterson, Environmental Planner with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and co-lead of the South Mountain Partnership. "The Mini-Grant program continues to be a highly successful tool for the Partnership to translate this conversation into action on the ground, and boost our partners' efforts to achieve the goals and objectives that sustain the quality of life and sense of place that we enjoy here in the South Mountain region."

The South Mountain Partnership is jointly led by the ATC and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). It focuses on the four-county region of Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and York counties. The Partnership is a unified alliance of citizens, businesses, not-for-profits, and local and state government officials and agencies. Together, these partners see the stewarding of the region's natural, cultural and recreational resources as critical to sustaining the quality of life and economic health of the region's citizens and communities. The Partnership's key role is as regional facilitator in this discussion, and the ATC's local roots and extensive conservation work in central Pennsylvania has made it a logical fit to lead the initiative.

Funds for the Mini-Grant program originate from DCNR's Bureau of Recreation and Conservation and the Community Conservation Partnership Program. These funds are derived from the Environmental Stewardship Fund.

Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations, municipalities, counties, and educational institutions. For more information and downloadable copies of the grant application process visit http://www.southmountainpartnership.org. To submit an application for the 2013 grant round, email Jonathan Peterson at jpeterson@appalachiantrail.org.

TwinXL.com Expanding Their Twin XL Comforter Line For College-Bound Students

College students of all ages will be heading to their desired public university and private campuses with everything they need to make their four-year stay in the dormitory enjoyable. Twin XL is a leading company in dorm bedding as they supply the often hard-to-find twin extra long bedding to fit dorm beds. Now, college students can find even more choices as the company is expanding their comforter line to include three brand new products that will fit the strange bed sizes found at most colleges and universities.

The Lace Twin XL Comforter set comes in a black and white floral print comforter and sham. This simple and elegant set is made of 100% polyester fiber fill and shell to give it durability and long-life so the colors won't fade from multiple washings. The eye-pleasing design will fit into any decor of the room as it will fit perfectly on the twin extra long bed.

In addition to the lace comforter, the company is also offering the Maui Abstract set for college students who want a bit more color to their bedding. The Maui Abstract Twin XL has a tropical floral pattern motif as the pink, mocha, turquoise and lime green colors stimulates a fun and happy atmosphere that will calm stressed college students. This set comes with a comforter and a sham.

The third new comforter piece is aptly titled Picture Perfect, suited for college students who have more of an artistic style to their personality. The Picture Perfect Twin XL comforter set has black and violet picture frame patterns combining both contemporary and modern artistic style to make this comforter one-of-a-kind. Both the comforter and sham come in 100% polyester for warmth and durability.

Choices can be limited for college students when it comes to bedding. The twin extra long bed size can be difficult to find, with the students either getting the small twin bedding that barely fits or opting for the more expensive queen size bedding sets. The Twin XL company is a specialty provider of twin extra long bedding in a vast selection of patterns and solid colors so students can find the bedding they want that won't stress their limited budgets.

College students shouldn't have to live uncomfortably in their dorm room by not having the right bedding just because they must deal the the twin extra long beds provided by the university that are 5-inches longer than the normal size twin beds found at mattress and furniture stores. With the three new comforter sets coming in sizes 63 x 92 inches, the bed will be completely covered without the college student having to shift and adjust the comforter and sham throughout the night.

Twin XL is a premier bedding company offering college students dorm bedding to fit twin extra long size beds. The company supplies comforters, sheets, mattress pads, bed skirts and pillows that are trendy and affordable to college students who want the modern look at affordable prices. American College of Education Announces Digital Tools for the K-12 Classroom Online Course

American College of Education, an accredited online college that provides online degree programs for educators, announces that it will offer a massive online open course (MOOC) on Digital Tools for the K-12 Classroom from May 6, 2013, to June 9, 2013.

The free online course is designed primarily for K-12 educators and other professionals who want to implement current web-based tools in order to promote engagement. The course examines free web-based tools like Animoto, Glogster and Prezi as well as best practices for teacher-led and student-driven activities in the K-12 classroom.

American College of Educations Department of Digital Learning and Teaching Chair Dr. Catherine Dutton and Dr. Rebekah McPherson created the course to provide an open forum for educators to gather, discuss and explore online tools.

The course is accessible to all professionals who want to keep pace with changes in technology, including those who may not have time for a traditional graduate course. We have designed a course that encourages interaction and allows students opportunities to apply their knowledge, but the benchmarks for the course will not be graded assignments, said Dr. Dutton. We have designed the discussions to be areas where students can participate and truly discuss the topic. Whether you feel compelled to contribute or you just want to listen, thats perfectly fine!

Previously, Dr. Dutton taught high school in Dallas and Lewisville, Texas, and was the Manager of Instructional Technology at Texas Womans University. Dr. McPherson is a Texas certified Master Technology Teacher and has taught for six years at the middle school and high school levels in addition to two years of university experience.

Enrollment is limited through the Canvas online learning platform, so students are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Enrolled students also may access the course through Canvass mobile app.

Softtek Reaffirms Distinction as a Socially Responsible Company

Softtek, founder of the nearshore industry and leading global IT services provider dedicated to maximizing the value of applications, announced today that it has been recognized by the Mexican Center of Philanthropy (CEMEFI in Spanish) as a "Socially Responsible Company" (ESR in Spanish), for the fourth year in a row.

Softtek remains committed to corporate social responsibility through implementing activities designed 1) to improve the quality of life for its associates 2) to advance the social development of the communities where it operates and 3) to protect and care for the environment.

A key event that Softtek enacted in its 2012 campaign to benefit the community was the "Educational Partnership Project," in which Softtek, along with the Government of the state of Nuevo Leon and the Educational Alliance (Alianza Educativa), created a school of excellence in the state of Nuevo Leon. This center provided economic support to improve school facilities, in addition to supporting volunteers who focused on improving the educational standards and quality of life for the students. At the same time, Softtek continued to support the "Aula Tecnolgica" project, which created an educational center devoted to the basic use of computers for grade-school students in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Additionally, for over a decade Softtek has carried out Make a Difference Day, an annual event which provides assistance to civil society organizations and underprivileged groups through remodeling homes, painting schools and holding food/grocery/clothing drives. The event takes place each year globally across Softtek's offices.

"Softtek works tirelessly to create excellence for our clients, without forgetting the importance of the well-being of our associates, and of the communities wherein we operate. We do this by promoting athletics, activities that unite families, and by working to improve the overall health and mental well-being of our communities," commented Heriberto Ortiz, global leader of Softtek's social responsibility.

"We are proud to be awarded this recognition for the fourth consecutive year, and can say with confidence that our commitment to corporate social responsibility will only continue to strengthen in the coming years," concluded Blanca Trevio, president and CEO of Softtek.

Scientists Stress Need for National Marine Biodiversity Observation Network

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- With ocean life facing unprecedented threat from climate change, overfishing, pollution, invasive species and habitat destruction, a University of Florida researcher is helping coordinate national efforts to monitor marine biodiversity.

Humans depend on the ocean for food, medicine, transportation and recreation, yet little is known about how these vast ecosystems spanning 70 percent of the Earths surface are functioning and changing. Following a workshop sponsored by U.S. federal agencies in 2010, researchers at eight institutions have proposed a blueprint for establishing a cooperative marine biodiversity observation network to monitor trends in marine ecosystem health and the distribution and abundance of oceanic life. The research will appear online in BioScience Thursday and in the journals May print issue.

Biodiversity observation networks are indispensible tools, allowing scientists to follow and predict ecosystem changes to facilitate proactive responses to environmental pressures, said study co-author Gustav Paulay, invertebrate zoology curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the UF campus.

Biodiversity is important not only because its what the natural world is about, but also because tracking it tells you how healthy things are, Paulay said. As an indicator of ecosystem health and resilience, biodiversity is key for sustaining oceans that face accelerating environmental change.

Experts determined a national marine biodiversity observation network could be established using existing technology within five years with appropriate funding and collaboration, but the effort requires strong leadership to integrate all the necessary elements, Paulay said. The study provides a series of recommendations, including coordination of existing efforts, digitization of historical data -- including vast museum collections and establishment of regional centers to process and identify specimens.

Tracking diversity is not just about tracking fish, or whales, or corals, but everything, Paulay said. To date, there have been few attempts to track biodiversity broadly in the ocean.

From tiny phytoplankton and massive marine mammals to awe-inspiring sea dragons and ancient reefs, every element is important for healthy ecosystems, Paulay said.

Outside the U.S., efforts to create a marine biodiversity observation network have begun regionally in New Zealand and the European Union. The Smithsonian Institution also launched the first worldwide network of coastal field sites in 2012, a long-term project to monitor the oceans coastal ecosystems.

Jim Carlton, a professor at Williams College in Massachusetts and director of the Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport, said the concept of a marine network is critical because elements are inter-related, from water quality and issues with fisheries to the regular arrival of new invasive species.

Its rather amazing that in 2013, we dont have a well-established marine biodiversity network -- how could we not? said Carlton, who is not involved with the study. All coasts around the world are changing and we have a remarkably poor understanding about the extent of that change in many areas.

People are more dependent on oceans than they may realize, and without a coordinated network, researchers will not know how to manage these ecosystems, he said.

The oceans are feeding hundreds of millions of people, they control the Earths climate, 90 percent of all world goods travel on the ocean and most people in the world live within 100 miles of the sea, Carlton said. For recreation, we rely on the fact that we can go to a beach and not get sick. We depend upon a huge amount of these resources in ways that we often dont know, but it really means maintaining the health of the ocean.

(EDITORS: STORY MAY END HERE)

Divers have witnessed the effects of climate change most clearly on coral reefs, whose delicate ecology is highly sensitive to changes in maximum ocean temperatures, Paulay said.

The scale of change was driven home to me in Palau in 1998, during a survey soon after the 1998 Pacific-wide warming event, Paulay said. Palau is one of the gems of the world in terms of marine environments and reef diversity. When we returned to sites that once had acre upon acre of vibrant staghorn and bottlebrush corals covering the bottom, we found but a desert of dead skeletons -- mortality was virtually 100 percent.

Study co-authors include Emmett Duffy of the College of William and Mary, Linda Amaral-Zettler of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., Daphne Fautin of the University of Kansas, Tatiana Rynearson of the University of Rhode Island, Heidi Sosik of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and John Stachowicz of the University of California, Davis.
