Well Said, Well Read: New Method of Offering Customer Promotions Expands the Reach and Receptiveness of Red Apple Reading

In an ever-increasing world of cyber communication, text messaging, and sentiments abbreviated to 140 characters, Tammy Bennecke, creator of Red Apple Reading, is finding that customers pleased with her online early-elementary reading education program are still willing to take the time to spread the word about their satisfaction.

A longtime educator, Bennecke saw far too many students fall behind in the classroom, simply because they were unable to grasp the crucial language skills at the same time as their peers, leading to a lag in their learning abilities that could plague them throughout their grade-school education.

Benneckes answer was Red Apple Reading, a tutorial program accessed via computers and tablets with an internet connection, helping young learners build their reading skills through engaging games, interactive characters, and a responsive pace that synchronizes with each students stride.

In an effort to get her program into the hands of more students, Bennecke has taken steps to expand her reach. From a partnership with LivingSocial to a special promotion for educators, Bennecke took advantage of special offers to make the program more affordableand access to Red Apple Reading easier than everthroughout the first month of 2013. The result was an explosion of Red Apple Reading users across the learning spectrum.

Bennecke conveyed that Red Apple Reading is now being utilized in at least 45 states in the U.S., plus a few outside countriesand plans to expand her continental (and perhaps inter-continental?) reach. Plans are in progress for collaborations with popular online coupon programs Google Offers and Groupon, as well as possibly more promotions with LivingSocial.

We are finding that this method of marketingrevenue sharing with coupon and daily deals companiesis currently the most effective way to get our reading program into the hands of parents and children quickly, Bennecke said. Getting more children to use the program helps more children become better readers, which is what we are here for.

A plethora of pleased-customer testimonials found on the sites Testimonials and Facebook pages assure Bennecke her program is resonating with students, educators, and parents.

While offering Red Apple Reading through deal sites and coupon affiliates alters the profit margin for Red Apple Reading, Bennecke says that, after reading of the widespread help her program is offering, shes willing to take a smaller piece of the (apple) pie.

Its important for us to make this instructional program accessible to parents and early childhood educatorseven if the majority of our sales are through discounts and our revenue split is about half, Bennecke said. We are a small company with a big heart, and we want to help as many children as possible become better readers.

About Red Apple Reading:
With offices in Southern California, Red Apple Reading was founded in 2011 by educator Tammy Bennecke. The company is in the process of developing a full range of pre-kindergarten through third grade reading products, as well as upper elementary/middle school reading adventure games, available both online and as mobile apps. New College Admissions Standards Receive Attention from Escandalo Securiport

Escandalo Securiport commented on a new article released by The Huffington Post that details changes to the 2013-2014 Common Application. The professional writing company will adapt to these changes to continue to help their clients craft unique and well-worded essays that help them to stand out amongst thousands of applicants.

One of the most significant changes to Common Application standards has to do with the word limit for essays. In years past, the limit was 500 words, however this year the maximum word count has been raised to 650 words. For students who prefer brevity, the instructions make it clear that an applicant doesn't need to write the full amount; however, essays must be at least 250 words long. Long-winded students will feel dismayed at the new rule that states that the word limit will be strictly enforced. In years past, admissions officers were lenient with those whose essays soared well above this word count, but this is no longer the case.

Another major shakeup has to do with the topics that an applicant can write about. Many students favored the topic that prompted students to write an essay on the topic of their choice. This prompt has since been eliminated, however the Common Application committee that worked to develop new topics made it a point to offer students a range of topics that were broad enough to allow them to share their personal stories with admissions officers.

The Common Application committee opted to release the new topics far enough in advance so that all students were aware that changes were coming. An entirely new version of the application debuts on August 1, 2013.

Several college admissions officers commented that students frequently turn in essays that are too "safe." They note that the pieces are structured well, but lack personality and make it difficult to get an idea about the student's skills.

In a statement to the press, Escandalo Securiport comments on these critiques, "Many students struggle to convey their unique traits while still writing in a professional manner. As Common Application procedures change, it's now even more important than ever before to seek professional writing help when necessary. This ensures that your document answers the prompt fully, while still giving an admissions officer a chance to get know you, and understand what you would bring to that school."

The article's author notes that some students' essays become too "safe" because of over analysis. The author states, "You want to make sure your essays are engaging, and nothing kills inviting writing like too many rewrites."

Escandalo Securiport reflects on this statement commenting, "While a student should spend a substantial amount of time crafting an essay, overthinking the creative process is often detrimental to the finished product."

Student loans are difficult to discharge in bankruptcy, regardless of whether they are federal or private loans. Under the current law and practice, only borrowers who have suffered undue hardships that result in little or no hope that they will ever be able to repay student loans are eligible for discharge. However, some people believe that this should change.

Senator Dick Durbin is calling on lawmakers to pass new regulations on private student loans. Durbin is sponsoring a bill that would authorize debt forgiveness for private student loans in cases of bankruptcy.

Durbin said many private student loans do not have the same benefits to students that federal student loans do such as the possibility of deferment and fixed interest rates. According to Durbin, two out of three students say did not know the difference between government loans and private student loans, suggesting that students don't know what they are getting into when they take out private loans.

Federal student loans and private student loans have differences

Federal Student Aid, an office of U.S. Department of Education, explains that there is a big difference between a federal student loan and a private student loan. For example, the interest rate of the federal student loan is fixed and is often lower than private loans, whereas private student loans can have variable interest rates, some greater than 18 percent. Moreover, private student loans do not have protections that federal student loans offer like caps on interest rates, flexible repayment options and limited cancellation rights.

With these differences, many people think that private student loans should be treated differently from federal student loans and should therefore be dischargeable in bankruptcy. This used to be the case, but a 2005 law made it difficult for private student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy, just like federal student loans.

Dischargeability of student loans and debt relief generally

Since the 1970s, Congress has debated about whether private student loans should be discharged in bankruptcy. In 1976, Congress first made it difficult for the student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy. In 2005, Congress included private student loans in the non-dischargeability category as part of comprehensive bankruptcy amendments. However, Senator Hillary Clinton from New York introduced her recommendation that Congress should act immediately to eliminate the non-dischargeability provision for private student loans, which was included in the Senate bill in 2006. Now Senator Durbin is sponsoring a bill to authorize the discharge of private student loans in bankruptcy.

Student loans are not subject to any statute of limitations, meaning that the loans will never expire and that the debt sticks with you for a lifetime. Aside from student loans, a bankruptcy petition may help with other debts like credit cards, car payments and even a mortgage payment. If you are overwhelmed with student loans and other debts, a local attorney with bankruptcy expertise may be able to help your situation.

Canterbury Awards First Prize to Macclesfield College Students

Four students from Macclesfield College are celebrating after winning first prize in a competition set by Canterbury, the world's most recognised rugby brand and official team kit supplier to England Rugby.

In conjunction with UTV Media, schools across the northwest were invited to take part in a competition to create a 30 second commercial about their local rugby team. The brief was to create a radio advert that encapsulated the spirit of rugby in a creative, entertaining fashion. The prize was a VIP day out at the rugby plus Canterbury vouchers for each winning team member.

Creative Media Production students 17 yr old Matt Turner, Adam Holmes, 17 Luke Crawforth, 17 and 19 year old Mark Taylor teamed up to put their creative skills to the test, and their commercial was voted the overall winner from a shortlist of eight.

Student Matt Turner said: "We had to come up with a script lasting 30 seconds, targeting a specific market, with the goal of getting people to go and watch Sale Sharks play. It was a really practical project and working like that makes it easier to learn and improve our skills."

The students chose Sale Sharks as their local team and introduced the strapline...Come and 'Sale' with the Sharks.

Chris Stephenson, CEO of Canterbury and one of the judges said: "We were very impressed by the standard of the entries, however this particular one stood out from the crowd. It grabbed the listener's attention from the outset and clearly communicated the message whilst being light-hearted."

Curriculum leader Annie Ashton added that she was delighted that the students' hard work had been recognised: "All of our students have worked incredibly hard on this project, which formed part of the unit 'working to a live brief'. It gave the students really valuable experience in tackling a real brief and credit to all of them, and their lecturer Yeng Leung, for working so hard on this.

The students will all get a VIP day out at a Sale Sharks rugby match, including tickets for the game, a meal, a souvenir and a chance to meet a player. They will also each get a GBP50 voucher to spend online at Canterbury.com and have their winning commercial broadcast on Tower FM.

About Canterbury

Over 100 years ago, three men began making woolen garments in a small town on the South Island of New Zealand. John Lane, Pringle Walker and Alfred Rudkin were English natives who emigrated to Canterbury and named their new company after the local area. This was a brand rooted in the New Zealand soil. Like the Kiwi landscape itself, it was rugged and uncompromising.

Canterbury of New Zealand have made innovative rugby and sports clothing ever since.

Address Diesel Technician Shortage by Improving Image of Profession

The best way for the transportation industry to attract new candidates for the profession of diesel technician is by educating the young about the realities and rewards of the job, said Andy Stopka, Vice President of Maintenance for NationaLease, one of the largest full service truck leasing organizations in North America. "We as an industry need to make a better effort saluting excellence within the profession as a way of improving its image in the general public," he noted in a guest blog posting on the AmeriQuest Transportation Services Website.

He pointed to a report by the Harvard Graduate School of Education that today's "college for all" mentality can keep students from other viable career paths as they entered adulthood. Rather than taking on crushing debt and leaving college with few marketable skills, more high school graduates should look for other paths that have real currency in today's labor market, such as becoming a diesel technician.

Stopka hails programs like the ATA's Technology and Maintenance Council's annual SuperTech national skills competition that applauds the knowledge and hands-on skills required by leading maintenance professionals. He also pointed to NationaLease's Top Tech Challenge, now entering its third year, which identifies and honors the most proficient NationaLease technicians. Those winners go on to compete in SuperTech.

"We in the truck maintenance industry are convinced that more young people would pursue the career of diesel technician if they knew more about the demand for the candidates, the job satisfaction, and even the financial rewards and other benefits that come with it," Stopka said in his blog. "It comes to down to we as industry providing effective education of young people who have the aptitude and ability to move forward. One of the best ways of doing it is improving the image of this profession."

Though the legal drinking age is 21, many teens in Pennsylvania choose to consume alcohol anyway. Underage drinking is particularly prevalent on Pennsylvania's many college campuses. However, young people would be mistaken to think that mere fact that underage drinking is not uncommon means that it is tolerated by law enforcement.

This fall, Pennsylvania State Police launched a crackdown on underage drinking, focusing on college campuses.

As part of the program, police departments worked with campus officials to develop strategies to minimize underage drinking. They also worked in tandem with campus security departments to arrest and punish students caught drinking underage or serving alcohol to minors.

In addition, police visited businesses that sell alcohol near college campuses to remind them of the penalties for selling alcohol to minors. Businesses that sell alcohol to minors face substantial fines and possible loss of their liquor licenses. In addition, individuals who sell alcohol to minors may face jail time and potential civil liability.

Pennsylvania underage drinking laws

Many people look at college drinking as a rite of passage -- something that nearly everyone does, and that doesn't represent a major problem so long as the student is keeping up with his or her studies.

While this may be true for some university students, it is also true that an underage drinking arrest can cause significant disruptions in a student's life.

In Pennsylvania, minors who are caught possessing or consuming alcohol can be fined up to $300 and jailed for up to 90 days. The potential fine increases with each subsequent offense. Carrying a false ID is also a crime, even if there is no proof that the minor used the false ID to purchase alcohol.

Underage drinking infractions can also result in loss of driving privileges. A conviction for underage consumption or possession of alcohol, possessing a fake ID or misrepresenting their age can have their driver's license suspended for up to 30 days. A second conviction for one of these offenses can result in a one-year suspension, while a third offense can bring a three-year loss of driving privileges.

Students over age 21 can face trouble if they host a drinking party where minors are present or otherwise provide alcohol to a person under age 21. Anybody who supplies alcohol to a person under age 21 can be charged with a third-degree misdemeanor. Convictions can result in a minimum fine of $1,000 and up to one year in prison.

If you or your child has been charged with an underage drinking offense, it is important to take the charges seriously and consult with an experienced criminal defense attorney.

Australian Global Citizenship Programs for School Students Take Tasmanian Students to Timor Leste

Tasmania, Australia February, 2013 Tasmanias Scotch Oakburn College sent the second group of their staff and students off to visit their Timor Leste global citizenship partner school, Maliana One High School, as part of a global citizenship program for school students. Principal Andrew Barr also joined the trip, facilitated by not-for-profit social education organisation Destination Dreaming, which runs global service learning programs for Australian school students in partnership with schools in rural Australia and in nearby countries. www.destinationdreaming.org.au/

The students first morning in Maliana began with dancing at 5:00am with new local friends, before the group headed out to watch the Tour De Timor bike race through the town. Each day was filled with lots of English language tutoring- working in small groups at the Encouragement House and at Maliana One a key way to bring the global citizenship program to life on each trip. The Scotch Oakburn teachers also ran a session for pre-service teachers at the local university to foster a higher level of shared learning as part of the global citizenship program.

One evening, the group shared dinner with a local family just outside Maliana, who are campaigning to get a library built in a nearby village. This is a worthy project that Destination Dreaming is currently negotiating funding and support for.

After Scotch Oakburn Colleges first visit in 2011, the Colleges community raised an amazing $3,000 for their partner Timor Leste school. This years group had the privilege of donating the funds on behalf of the community, which will enable Maliana One to install fresh drinking water for their 1300 students and 55 staff. www.destinationdreaming.org.au/

Funds from the groups visit and Destination Dreaming were also used to buy materials and pay local builders to construct another student shelter for the new dormitory Kookaburra. The shelters have proved to be a real hit and it was great to see the students (from both Scotch Oakburn and the Encouragement House) assisting the builders to prepare the site and foundation.

At the conclusion of the 10 days, a participant of the global service learning program for school students 18-year-old Kathleen said I have learnt that giving is a truly fantastic experience and that making a change in one persons life, changes the world for them. I had the best week of my life giving and as a result will endeavor to share and continue to give for the rest of my life. www.destinationdreaming.org.au/

Scotch Oakburn teacher Tania Deguara said, once again the experience was incredible. Cultural awareness, global understanding, problem solving and collaboration are essential skills to have to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. A Destination Dreaming program provides an excellent opportunity for young people to learn about and experience the challenges, hopes and possibilities of another culture and in turn learn about the ways they as young people in Australia can shape the world they want to live in.

Destination Dreaming works with schools in Australia and internationally to create sustainable community partnerships and teach students from both areas about global citizenship, self-awareness and social justice. These global citizenship programs for school students are aimed at helping the young people to thrive in an increasingly global world where understanding cultural differences is becoming more and more important. SECOND ANNUAL NATIONAL MOTH WEEK
JULY 20-28, 2013

The Second Annual National Moth Week (www.nationalmothweek.org) is being held across the world from July 20-28, 2013. The first National Moth Week was held in July 2012 and was extremely successful with participants in 49 U.S. states and 29 countries.

National Moth Week provides a much-needed spotlight on moths and their ecological importance as well as their incredible biodiversity. Numerous organizations have partnered with National Moth Week and are supporting the event. Popular interest in moths is rapidly growing as noted by the recent publication of the new Peterson Field Guide to the Moths by David Beadle and Seabrooke Leckie, moth caterpillar guides by David Wagner and a vast number of natural history and moth-oriented Internet resources.

National Moth Week offers everyone, everywhere a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths. Through partnerships with major online biological data depositories such as Project Noah, Discover Life, Moth Photographers Group, BAMONA and BugGuide, National Moth Week participants can help map moth distribution and provide needed information on other life history aspects.

Why moths? Moths are among the most diverse organisms on earth. Estimates of the number of moth species range from about 150,000 to more than 500,000. For many, even the most basic information is lacking. Moths offer endless options for study, education, photography, and fun. Moths can be found everywhere from inner cities to suburban backyards, and the most wild and remote places. The diversity of moths is simply astounding. Their colors and patterns are either dazzling or so cryptic that they define camouflage. Shapes and sizes span the gamut with some as small as a pinhead and others as large as an adult hand. Most moths are nocturnal, and need to be sought at night to be seen others fly like butterflies during the day. Finding moths is easy and can be as simple as leaving a porch light on and checking it after dark. Serious moth aficionados use special lights and baits to attract them. Moths are also featured widely in literature and art providing a different angle for enjoyment and study. Moth Nights are often held by nature groups and allow an opportunity for an introduction to the creatures or for more serious pursuits.
National Moth Week brings together everyone interested in moths to celebrate these amazing insects. This summer groups and individuals from all the across the world will spend some time during National Moth Week looking for moths and sharing what theyve found. Getting involved during National Moth Week is easy: attend a Moth Night event, start an event, join friends and neighbors and check porch lights from time to time, set up a light and see what is in your own backyard, read literature about moths, etc. But no matter what, participate; the richness of moths is sure to fascinate. National Moth Week: Exploring Nighttime Nature.
If youd like more information about National Moth Week or to participate and register a location, visit the website at www.nationalmothweek.org, email us at dmoskowitz@ecolsciences.com or liti@nationalmothweek.org.

My Driving School Offering Driving Lessons in New Car Models

With shocking reports of unsafe cars and unprofessional instructors, new drivers are being subjected to high levels of stress during their lessons and are struggling to achieve competency during their testing. This learning environment is entirely detrimental to achieving success for students.

Reports show instances of personal insults and verbal abuse directed at nervous drivers, to the point that they refuse to continue learning to drive. Cases of cars with poor quality tires, dangerously slippery pedals, and a range of other significant safety concerns are shockingly still being uncovered during the final examinations by QLD Transport.

Learning to drive is difficult enough without having the added pressure of having to worry about the safety of the car and a potential lack of knowledge from the instructor. Finding a reputable driving school is essential for new drivers, and should be the first priority when learning to drive. Many QLD Transport Driving Examiners are forced to fail students for simple mistakes due to inadequate tuition or instructor incompetency. This process is not only emotionally taxing, but is expensive and time-consuming as well.

After seeing a distinct lack of professional tuition in the market, a former QLD Transport Driving Examiner decided to address the issues she was seeing within the industry and begin her own school. My Driving School employs a range of professionally qualified instructors that have been hand selected for their exceptional driving and teaching ability.

The highly skilled experts tailor their teaching methods to suit each individual student, and ensure that maximum competency is reached in a safe and comfortable environment. My Driving School recognises that every person will bring a different set of skills, attitudes and aptitudes to their driving lessons, and endeavour to match your instructor accordingly. With an emphasis on fun, the lessons are productive and enjoyable. Each instructor is familiar with the local area that they are assigned to, helping the students to relax and concentrate on learning the skills at hand.

The school has an impressive fleet of new model Suzuki Swifts, ensuring that students have the opportunity to drive in the utmost safety. Both instructors and the cars are available for extended lessons, including whole day trips. This is a great way to sign off the log book hours while receiving quality instruction from friendly and well-trained professionals.

For more information, visit their website at [http://www.mydrivingschool.com.au or call with any enquiries about the range of professional services on offer.

College Campus & Kalahari.com Launch Mobile Learning

One of the countrys leaders in technologically-focused learning, College Campus, has launched a digital offering that will better equip students to benefit from digitised content.

An educational brand of the Independent Institute of Education, College Campus has entered into a strategic partnership with South Africas leading online book and retail store, kalahari.com, to provide College Campus students with tablets and access to pre-loaded digitised course content from several publishers, a first for higher education in South Africa.

All diploma students, who sign the 2013 registration contract and pay their deposits or settle in full, will receive a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 P3100 7 8GB with Wi-Fi. They can upgrade to a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 P5100 10 16GB with Wi-Fi, by paying in R1 000, says College Campus MD, Genevieve Allen.

However, simply giving out a device is not enough. It must be loaded with information. Thats why we invested nine months research and preparation with kalahari.com and Samsung South Africa, says Allen.

Students will receive free student manuals and financial assistance in purchasing digital textbooks, a cheaper alternative to hard copies.

Allen stresses: We have ensured that upwards of 60% of the required textbooks are now available in digital form from kalahari.com and can be downloaded and read on the tablets using kalaharis e-reader application.

Lecturers and students will be trained to use the devices, which are to be utilised in lecture rooms, the library and at home.

Besides the cost-saving benefit of more affordable digital textbooks, the convenience and immediacy of learning that the tablet provides will be of great value to students. They can type notes or even record their lectures, access the Internet for research without having to wait for a computer, download their manuals, assignments and course content through our student portal and make full use of the multimedia and App functionality found on the tablet to aid them in their studies.

Digitising large quantities of text and images to make them available over the Internet and in downloadable form is a massive enterprise which is set to transform students ways of working.

The digital space is poised to explode in South African education says kalahari.com Academic Project Manager, John Edward Jacobs. Nonetheless, a lot needs to be done to enable this, and unlock the opportunities. We are very proud of being able to pull together the partnership, infrastructure and content in a small space of time. Most particularly, we are excited about our pioneering solution: we are able to pre-load the students digital textbook purchases onto their tablets, resolving untold logistical and supply issues. This means that on the first day of class, once the students register their kalahari.com ereader applications, they will immediately have access to all of their unique digital content on their Samsung devices

A recent excerpt from a mobile learning conference paper points out that in the developing world, mobile learning is not just about having the right content, on the right device, for the right person, at just the right time, but also having it at just the right cost, something our partnership with kalahari and the technology provided by Samsung allows us to do, says Allen.

Orthodontist in Buffalo Grove Shares Art/Science Link With Young Artists

In honor of National Children's Dental Health Month, which is observed each February, students from a local art studio are learning how Dr. Yan Razdolsky uses art and science to create gorgeous smiles for his patients.

Students from Art Studio Artishock are visiting Razdolsky's office to see how he pairs art and science to correct bite, jaw and alignment discrepancies in patients.

"I've always enjoyed the artistic aspects of orthodontics," says Razdolsky, an orthodontist in Buffalo Grove.

Talia Prilutsky, an Artishock instructor, says she seeks opportunities to expose her students to experiences outside the studio.

"Teaching art involves more than studio work," Prilutsky says. "There must be a variety of experiences so students gain broader knowledge bases to draw from when I give them projects."

Prilutsky is excited for the students to learn about the features of the skull and the jaws, as well as the tools Razdolsky and his staff use daily.

After the fieldtrip, she will assign a project related to what the students learned from it. Then Razdolsky's office will display the students' artwork.

Prilutsky says Razdolsky's office, Forever Smiles, is an ideal exhibition space because it's kid-friendly, and several students also are his patients.

"Having a public exhibition space to display their work is good for the students," she says. "It's a real self-esteem builder."

Razdolsky can't wait to see the artwork the students create, he says.

Home Campus Launches Online Portal for Learning Elementary Mathematics

Homecampus.com.sg, a Singapore-based online school of mathematics, has launched a web portal at http://www.homecampus.com.sg for elementary school children to teach them basic primary level maths through the extensive use of visuals.

According to Farhat Pachisa, co-founder of Home Campus, "Most children find math scary. Our main goal has been to make a fun and conducive environment for children so they can learn at their own pace. Home Campus focuses on building a strong foundation in primary-level mathematics while keeping in mind that every child has a unique aptitude, interest and learning curve."

Started up in 2010, the website offers various modes of studying mathematics including video lessons, practice worksheets and tests. "Users have access to literally unlimited practice questions on each topic with detailed step-by-step explanations if they get stuck at any point," adds Farhat. The website also provides graphical tools to parents and teachers to understand the child's progress and development.

Home Campus follows the latest maths curriculum as set by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore. "The Singapore math syllabus is recognized worldwide to be comprehensive. It is designed to encourage a deep understanding of mathematics in daily life. In particular, the model method of problem-solving, used widely on our website, helps develop the child's understanding of fundamental math concepts and proficiency in solving basic word problems," remarks Farhat.

Learning is every child's right. Home Campus makes it available to every child through its "pay as you wish" model.

Gang of eight, Obama present immigration reform proposals in Washington

On Monday, January 28, 2013, a Bipartisan group of Senators introduced a blueprint for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR). The Senators, dubbed the "Gang of Eight," include Shumer, McCain, Durbin, Graham, Menendez, Rubio, Bennett and Flake. With four Senators hailing from each side of the aisle, this is the first attempt at meaningful immigration reform since the ill-fated McCain/Kennedy proposal of some 8 years ago. Meanwhile, President Obama is determined to address the proposal and it is rumored that the Whitehouse's vision for reform will be somewhat more "left-leaning" in spirit than that put forth by the Gang of Eight.

Starting with the recognition that our immigration system is "broken" and has created a shadow class of some 11 million undocumented residents in the US, the overall tenor of the proposal is to acknowledge the reality that the US Government cannot feasibly deport 11 million individuals and that millions of these people are contributing to the U.S. economy, albeit "off the books." The blueprint offered will commit resources to protecting our border, but offering a "tough, but fair" legalization program to draw the undocumented out of the shadows.

To achieve these broader gals, the Gang of Eight's proposal highlights 4 legislative "pillars" that must be integral to the new system. First, the plan will include a Path to Citizenship for unauthorized immigrants, contingent on the securing of the borders and implementation of a tracking system to ensure that legally admitted nonimmigrants depart when required. Second, the plan will reform the legal immigration system to emphasize the importance of individual's attributes and accomplishments that will help build the economy and "strengthen American families." Third, the plan will create an employment verification system to prevent identity theft and end the hiring of unauthorized workers. Finally, the plan will establish an improved process for the admission of foreign workers to service our country's needs, while protecting all workers.

The Border Security initiative will include a complete overhaul of security systems and increased use of unmanned surveillance aircraft to detect illegal entrants and improve safety along the border for international commerce. The law, however, will recognize that certain undocumented people in the U.S., such as those who came here as children, made no conscious decision to break the law and will face a more lax road to obtaining legal status than other individuals. Also, workers contributing to the U.S. agricultural industry will be acknowledged as necessary to serving the important functions they fulfill in maintaining the nations food supply.

To attract the "best and brightest" foreign workers, the plan will authorize the granting of lawful permanent resident status to have received a Master's or PhD degree from an American University in the Science, technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. To protect existing U.S. workers, the reform plan proposes to implement an accurate employment verification system and strictly punish U.S. businesses that choose to hire unauthorized workers. Nonetheless, the Gang of Eight's blueprint promises to provide for a safe and humane system for lesser-skilled workers to enter the country in the future, to avoid involvement with drug cartels and alien smugglers.

While the CIR blueprint from the Gang of Eight includes many laudable proposals, it is not without flaws and one of its first and most vocal critics will be the President himself, who is set to deliver a response to the Gang of Eight plan imminently. Although these plans are still in the blueprint stage, undocumented immigrants and students in the United States who feared that attending college in the U.S. was an impossibility should remain hopeful. A chance to work in the U.S., attend college at one of this nation's fine institutions and live the American dream may be just around the corner.
