Winona State University Helps Entrepreneur 'Hold on Tight' to Kwick Gripper Dream

Winona State University provided key support and an important contribution to an innovator and entrepreneurial individual. Ben Eby, of E.B. Tool Company, along with his father, Eric Eby, created the Kwick Gripper nail remover over a period of seven years. They were eager to get the nail puller prototype made in order to start showing it to customers. That's where Matt Benson of Winona State University stepped in and gave Ben the support he needed to get started. Matt Benson is the director of the Composite Materials Technology Center (COMTEC) at the University. He played a crucial role in helping Ben develop a rapid prototype for the Kwick Gripper nail puller.

As Ben put it, "Matt was able to give me a working model from my drawings to test and show potential customers months before the Kwick Gripper was produced. This enabled me to show the concept in a way that no static picture ever could, and ultimately helped make the Kwick Gripper a success."

The Kwick Gripper is more than just a nail pulling tool. Because it translates leverage into pulling force, it is highly effective at nail removal, lag bolt removal, and screw removal. It has strong jaws that make easy work of broken and embedded nails too. The Kwick Gripper nail remover is designed to cause minimal damage to wood, allowing both professionals and home hobbyists to salvage more wood from their deconstruction projects.

Thanks to Matt Benson, Winona State University and the prototype nail puller, Ben Eby and E.B. Tool Company are now poised to release the first of the Kwick Gripper nail removal tools. The E.B. Tool Company would like to acknowledge the support and valuable services provided by Benson and the University who lent their time and efforts free of charge. Their only request was a letter of thanks to the University and a dozen Kwick Grippers when production is complete. With community support like this from Winona State University, The Eby's entrepreneurial dream is becoming a reality.

Success of Japanese School Lunch Program Could Teach U.S. Schools a Lesson

If we in the United States could incorporate aspects of the Japanese school lunch model, we could certainly see healthier children with less preventable medical conditions, says Dr. Michael Omidi, co-founder of the Childrens Obesity Fund. According to a recent report by the Washington Post, the Japanese school lunch program not only provides fresh, healthy meals to its students on a daily basis, the students are so impressed by their meals that parents often call the school asking for recipes. While the United States public school lunch programs are in a state of flux, Japan has been using the same successful model for more than 40 years.

Japan has the lowest childhood obesity rate in the world. The average Japanese child is expected to have a lifespan of more than 80 years. At school, Japanese children are served a wide variety of foods, all freshly prepared on the premises. Their meals are supplemented by hearty portions of vegetables, tofu and rice, but the menu also includes comforting items in moderation, like pork belly and fried chicken. The school lunch standard has proven such a success that cookbooks with school lunch recipes have been issued, and government officials have stated that waste has been cut to five percent. So, why isnt the school lunch model being used in the U.S.?

We have to change our thinking when it comes to food. If we can teach our children that food is meant to fuel our bodies and facilitate health, the task of eliminating childhood obesity will be much easier, says Dr. Michael Omidi. A significant factor is that Japan has wholly different cultural priorities and standards for what is acceptable behavior in children. In the United States, lunch programs focus heavily on what children want to eat, while Japan does not suffer picky eaters. Japanese children are raised to accept the food they are given without complaint. If a child feels he or she cannot eat what is offered, schools nutritionists counsel the children about disordered eating. There is no attempt to cater to the individual tastes and there are no alternative options from vending machines.

Co-founded by Julian Omidi and Michael Omidi, M.D., the Childrens Obesity Fund (http://www.childrensobesityfund.org) hopes to help reverse the trend of rising obesity rates in America. The goal of the non-profit charity is to help people fully understand the obesity issue and its dire impacts on individuals and society as a whole -- and to use that knowledge to encourage children to grow up strong and healthy. Childrens Obesity Fund partners with other organizations to educate and support parents, educators and others so that we can all work together to raise healthy, active, social, and happy children. While the organization does not accept donations, it does encourage direct contributions of money and talents to the associations featured on our website. Childrens Obesity Fund is on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Childrens-Obesity-Fund/264244577009536?fref=ts and can also be found on Google+, Twitter and Pinterest.

Powder Coated Wood Manufacturer Builds Facilities for Training New Garage Cabinet Dealers

In the summer of 2012, RedLine Garagegear set out on an ambitious do-it-yourself project. Their desire was to create a space that would be functional and comfortable for the two day training session all new agents are required to attend, while also showing a full storage system being used in a garage setting.

RedLine Garagegear president, Troy Greenberg, designed a two story building that would serve as a functioning garage on the first floor and a classroom up above on the second floor. Troy did a large portion of the build himself and brought in independent contractors for the more tedious parts of the project.

One of our main goals with having new agents travel to our facilities here in South Beloit, IL is to give them a true sense of the quality of our products, said RedLine Garagegear National Director of Sales and Research, Bill Garrity. We thought it imperative to show agents how a complete system looks and holds up in a garage that is being used regularly.

RedLine Garagegear is the child company of Greenberg Casework Company Inc. For nearly thirty years, Greenberg Casework Company has been manufacturing custom cabinetry and casework. The companys work has been installed in schools, hospitals, department/retail stores, and large housing projects all over the United States. Another child company, GCC Coatings, is the manufacturers powder coating arm.

RedLine Garagegear sells its powder coated wood garage cabinets to homeowners in over 60 locations throughout North America through their network of certified agents. In areas where no dealer is available, the manufacturer sells direct to consumers.

Since its inception nearly a decade ago, RedLine Garagegear has been actively recruiting business owners to become a part of their agent network. In that time over one hundred representatives from businesses in the United States and Canada have learned standard operating procedures at the companys former training center just under a mile away from their manufacturing plant.

In roughly six months, the new training center was operational and ready to host RedLine Garagegears first training class of 2013. Nine individuals representing six businesses from five states and one province in the U.S. and Canada came together during those two days to get experience with the 3D design software, tour the manufacturing facilities, and see firsthand the garage cabinets and storage systems RedLine Garagegear produces.

We have known for some time that new RedLine dealers wanted to see a system being used in a functioning garage so I think this was a great move for us, said Troy. The time had come for us to update our training center and all the pieces just happened to come together at the right time.

Both Troy and Bill believe future dealers will greatly benefit from the move. With over 500 cabinet choices, RedLine truly does offer a place for everything. Troy and Bill stressed the need for agents to see what sort of things can be fit into a custom storage system so they can better advise customers when incorporating the various garage cabinets offered into a design.

RedLine Garagegear is always looking for established business owners to add to their growing agent network. Interested groups or individuals should check out their website today for more information on dealer opportunities.

Wake Forest Researcher Awarded NSF Grant to Develop Novel Flexible Electronics

Advances in organic semiconductor technology could one day lead to video screens that bend like paper and electronics sewn into clothing.

A team of researchers at Wake Forest University will help to make these flexible devices a reality by studying the relation between the physical structure and electronic properties of organic semiconductor crystals.

Their aim is to elucidate the intrinsic characteristics of single crystals and provide feedback for the development of novel, high-tech electronics and thin film devices.

A $400,000 National Science Foundation CAREER Award will support the new research. Award recipient Oana Jurchescu, an assistant professor of physics at Wake Forest University, said organic electronics have the potential to greatly impact the future semiconductor industry due to their low-cost, ease of processing, and versatility compared to the materials used now in electronic applications.

Current inorganic semiconducting materials such as silicon are processed in a vacuum at high temperatures. Jurchescu said this makes them expensive and limits their potential applications. Organic semiconductors on the other hand are not only inexpensive to process but can be applied to any medium-from metal and plastic to clothing and human skin at room temperature with spray paint or a device resembling an inkjet printer.

Fast deposition at up to a hundred feet per second may allow their production in large volumes and at low cost per unit area, an introduction of electronics everywhere, Jurchescu said.

Examples of the potential technology include transparent solar cells on building windows, car roofs and bus stations, electronic displays in previously inaccessible spaces, and wearable electronics due to the organic plastics thin, lightweight and conformal nature.

Jurchescu said her teams research will help define the potential and limitations of the organic crystalline films, which will in turn facilitate the development of large-area and low cost electronics.

The prestigious NSF CAREER Award funding the research is given to the nations top junior faculty who demonstrate excellence as teacher-scholars. It encourages excellent teaching, mentorship and community outreach. In line with these objectives, Jurchescu will offer a new course focused on carbon-based materials and devices, tentatively scheduled for the 2014-2015 academic year. She will give demonstrations on nanotechnology to children at Nanodays at Sciworks, a science and environmental center in Winston-Salem, N.C., and host research projects in her lab for motivated high school students and students from Forsyth Tech Community College as well. Additionally, Jurchescu will continue to mentor both graduate and undergraduate students, who are conducting research and pursuing careers in science.

Jurchescus NSF proposal bridges her interests in being a dedicated researcher and a passionate mentor. Maggie Payne, a junior who has taken several of Jurchescus classes, credited Jurchescu as the reason she became a physics major.

Dr. Jurchescu has inspired me as a strong female physicist. She is a passionate teacher who creates a supportive and challenging learning environment. As a research mentor, she has gone above and beyond her call of duty to make sure she meets with every member of our lab group- even during her maternity leave, said Payne, who also conducts research with Jurchescu in the Center for Nanotechnology for Molecular Materials. Working in her lab is one of the best experiences I have had at Wake Forest.

William Peace University's Justin G. Roy Named To Wake County Community Health Assessment Steering Committee

William Peace University (http://www.peace.edu), a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced that Justin G. Roy, vice president for communications and marketing, has been named to serve on the 2013 Community Health Assessment (CHA) Steering Committee for Wake County, which identifies and evaluates factors affecting overall public health in Wake County through a comprehensive state-developed process. Conducted every four years, the CHA evaluates specific areas including behavioral and social health, economic health, environmental health, lifelong learning, physical health, and safety.

Designed in part to provide a real-life snapshot of the needs and resources of Wake County, the CHA will compile individual perspectives from community members, organizations, businesses, municipalities and other Wake County stakeholders. Data collected will come from a range of platforms, including citizen surveys, focus groups and primary data collection, and be transferred into a strategic plan that generates an overall direction for the county, hospitals and community partners to pursue.

As a member of the 2013 Community Health Assessment Steering Committee, Roy will be responsible for providing feedback on the proposed process and potential questions to be asked by participating stakeholders; outlining resources and individuals to partake in the surveys and focus groups; representing a positive and encouraging voice in an effort to further the marketing efforts being conducted among various organizations; analyzing and providing feedback on the works groups and final reporting; and presenting the final report alongside staff members to the Human Services and Environmental Services Board and the Wake County Board of Commissioners.

QUOTES:
"Year after year, Wake County is recognized across the country as one of the greatest places to live in the United States, and that is due in part to the community's ongoing commitment to improvement overall," said Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., president of William Peace University. "We are honored to have Justin serve on the 2013 Community Health Assessment Steering Committee as he lends his time and insights to evaluating and improving the overall health of Wake County and its residents."

"The only way to keep Wake County moving forward is to assess the direction we are headed," said Roy. "The CHA is one of those critical components to ensuring that the needs of all of our citizens are being monitored. I am proud to be selected to join the 2013 CHA Steering Committee, and I look forward to serving alongside other members as we address the state of public health and grow the future of this great community."

Teen Driving Risks: Out with the Old, in with the New

A recent study has good news about teen drinking and driving. According to data released recently by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teen drinking and driving has plummeted by 54 percent nationwide since 1991. Unfortunately, as one risky behavior has decreased, another has popped up. Distracted driving, often from texts, e-mails and smartphones, is on the rise.

Drinking and Driving Down

The CDC study on teen drinking and driving incorporated self-reported data obtained through National Youth Risk Behavior Surveys as well as the results of toxicology reports from fatal teen drunk driving accidents across the country.

In 1991, according to the study, more than 1 in 5 high school students age 16 or older had engaged in drunk driving during the previous 30 days. In 2011, just over 1 in 10 reported doing so, the survey found. While the results are encouraging, it is clear that there is still a great deal of work to be done when it comes to preventing drunk driving among teens.

Though 90 percent of teens surveyed say they never drink and drive, that still leaves nearly one million teens that do. As reported by TIME, the CDC director said the report indicates progress "in the right direction, but we have to keep up the momentum."

Several factors are believed to be at play in the substantial decline in drunk driving among U.S. teens over the past two decades. According to the CDC, these include:

- Laws increasing the minimum drinking age to 21 in all 50 states
- Widespread adoption of graduated licensing laws for young drivers, which limit nighttime driving and impose passenger restrictions on teens
- Stricter zero-tolerance in every state making it illegal for those under age 21 to drive with any amount of alcohol in their system

Another significant factor cited by the CDC is an attitude shift among the nation's teen drivers. Compared to the past, the risks of drunk driving are more widely recognized, making it far less socially acceptable to drink and drive.

Texting While Driving Up

Unfortunately, the good news about teen drinking and driving is tempered by some bad news in another area: distracted driving. According to a recent National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 58 percent of high school seniors and 43 percent of high school seniors reported texting or emailing while driving during the previous month - despite laws prohibiting the practice in 39 states and Washington, D.C.

In California, texting on handheld devices is prohibited for all drivers, but a law passed earlier this year permits experienced drivers to send and receive text messages with the use of a hands-free device beginning in January 2013. Novice drivers are barred from cellphone use of any kind while driving.

With texting and driving at an all-time high, cellphone use is the most common cause of distraction-related accidents in California. Drivers under age 20 account for a bigger proportion of distracted driving crashes than any other age group, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that texting drivers are 23 times more likely to crash than drivers who are not distracted.

Regardless of whether driving under the influence, driving while distracted or simple inexperience causes an accident, when you or a loved one is injured in a crash with a teenage driver, you have options. After a car accident, contact an experienced personal injury lawyer in California to learn more.

Daily Deals Site Offers Charitable Donations

YIPDeals is a national daily deals site and has brought its YipGives program to Colorado through independent local marketing consultants. Like many sites, it has great deals on items many of us use every day. The difference, however, is in the details.

YIPDeals does an excellent job of working with schools, churches, nonprofit organizations and local chambers of commerce said Eric Wagner of Progressive Mobile Marketing, an independent marketing consultant for YIP.

YIPDeals takes 12 percent of each sale made and sets it aside specifically for charitable donations. Best of all, you can choose which charitable organization gets the money.

For many it is a win/win situation. You get some great deals on ordinary products and your personal favorite charity gets a nice sum of money, Wagner continued.

YIPDeals even has a special fundraising opportunity with schools.

Unlike many fundraisers that only last a short time, YIPDeals Fundraisers can go yearround and even into the summer. The more parents, students, teachers and administrators shop with YIPDeals, the more money the individual school earns. It is really that simple, Wagner added.

Most recently, the YIPDeals program, working with a PTA in a school raised over $600.00 for the school in a remarkably short time.

What helps with the YIPDeals program is that we also work with local merchants and restaurants so you get not only a great deal, but also a chance to help a school and a local business. The benefits are enormous when you look at everything that you get, Wagner continued.

Wikicollecting.org, the open-source collectors website, has announced the launch of its new auction catalogue index.

The online encyclopaedia, which launched in February 2011, now offers free fully-illustrated catalogue hosting for auction houses along with a helpful new index for readers.

Over 50 international auction houses, including PBA Galleries, Keno Auctions, Hansons, IAA, McTears and Rago, now host their catalogues on Wikicollecting with more companies signing up every week. The whole ethos of the site is to build a free resource for collectors around the world so its free for auction companies to host their catalogues with us and free for our readers to look up prices. Its perfect for collectors trying to put a value on their own items, and can help auction companies of every size connect with new potential customers.

In addition to the new catalogue index, Wikicollecting has streamlined many of the sites most popular categories including:

By bringing together tens of thousands of pages in these new indexes, we want to make it as easy as possible for readers to find the information theyre looking for, said Benson-James.

Were adding thousands of new articles and pages every week, with the help of our amazing contributors, and we want to ensure that Wikicollecting remains a valuable free resource thats easy for everyone to use no matter what they collect.

Spencers Calls for Extension of Nationwide School Survey to Include Asbestos in Schools

Spencers Solicitors, in advance of a House of Commons Education Select Committee evidence session tomorrow (Wednesday 13 March 2013) on Asbestos in Schools, is urging the Government to take action to address the long ignored problem of asbestos in our schools.
Spencers is calling for the current nationwide survey into the state of England's schools (the DfE's Property Data Survey Programme) to be extended to identify the scale of the problem of asbestos in our 23,000 educational premises and then to prioritise those schools that most need action.
Asbestos in schools is a vitally important and complex issue, but it has been neglected by successive governments, resulting in the deaths of teachers and other education workers every year. It is time for the DfE to stop delegating responsibility to individual local authorities and schools and for it to oversee the development of a nationwide programme to protect teachers and children from the dangers of asbestos.
John Spencer, Director of Spencers Solicitors, said:
"It is deeply shocking that 16 teachers died from mesothelioma in England in 2011 alone1. If a teacher was killed every month in the classroom from violence there would be public outrage and urgent calls for action, but because it is asbestos-related it is largely ignored.
"It is a complete waste of an opportunity that the Department for Education is currently running a nationwide survey to consider the physical state of England's schools, and yet asbestos is specifically not included.
"In an ideal world we would do all we can to totally eradicate asbestos from our schools once and for all, but in reality we must prioritise funding towards those schools where teachers and our children are most at risk. We can only prioritise action and expenditure if the scale of the problem is fully understood."
1 House of Lords Parliamentary Answer, 6 February 2013, http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201213/ldhansrd/text/130206w0001.htm#13020694000372
Specifically, Spencers has called for:
  • The DfE's Property Data Survey Programme to be extended urgently to include asbestos in schools.
  • There must be openness and transparency about the scale of the problem.
  • There is no single body responsible for the issues of asbestos in schools - this is resulting in a piecemeal approach to the problem with no national picture of the problem existing.
  • Regular school inspections and a comprehensive database available publically online of findings should be made available and there should be the phased removal of asbestos.
  • Future Schools Capital Allocations must include provision for the removal of asbestos from the schools most at risk.
Notes to editors:
Responsibility for managing the risks from asbestos containing materials comes under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 which determines that local authorities and individual schools have responsibility for the management of schools. Not having a significant central role, other than providing guidance on asbestos management, the Department for Education does not collect information on the presence and condition of asbestos in schools.

The Language Workshop For Children Employs The Unique Thibaut Technique In Language Education

New York, NY, 12-Mar-2013 - The Language Workshop for Children and director/founder, Francois Thibaut, are pleased to announce NYC French classes that children can use to achieve a high level of conversational language proficiency. The classes make use of the unique and successful Thibaut Technique for language education. To outsiders observing such classes, they appear to be more like a play group than a class.

The Thibaut Technique is a different manner of language learning that is fun and exciting for youngsters. The sessions are fitted to the appropriate age group and learning capacity of the children. In addition to French language, students can learn Chinese, Italian or Spanish. The classes might include festive visual aids, vocabulary-building songs, action games, language immersion and music that is original.

The Language Workshop for Children has been offering classes to toddler, preschoolers and elementary school age children since 1973 using the unique methods developed by Francois Thibaut. In combination with the Professor Toto DVD series, these classes are well-recognized throughout the country for quality and effectiveness in language teaching.

According to Francois Thibaut, "My technique is a whole language approach that employs both the right and left hemispheres of the brain. The left brain handles meaning, vocabulary and grammar. The right side of the brain is important for processing voice melody and emotional meaning. The Thibaut Technique uses games to enhance emotion, visual aids for symbolizing vocabulary building and songs to reinforce grammatical patterns. These efforts enable children to quickly learn to speak a second language."

Each of the teachers are trained in the Thibaut Technique. There are language-rich songs that have been specifically written for the Language Workshop for Children. The songs are recorded by native speakers. These songs reinforce punctuation, grammar and vocabulary in a way that makes learning fun. Parents can choose from a number of formats. These include school break programs, education for babies, summer day camp, language immersion programs for preschoolers and toddler classes.

Learn more about NYC French classes youngsters can take by checking out the website at http://languageworkshopforchildren.com today. Members of the press and other persons who have questions about the techniques or course content are invited to contact the school at the location described below.

RFU's Announce Prince Harry as Patron for the All Schools Programme and Canterbury as Partner

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) today announced Prince Harry as Patron of All Schools, and revealed Canterbury as the inaugural Official Partner for its programme to get more secondary state schools playing rugby union.

The RFU firmly believes that rugby union is a game for All Schools - all schools and all young people in the school can play, and rugby can have a positive impact on all of the school. Currently around 1,500 state secondary schools play rugby union. As Patron, Prince Harry will support the RFU in its ambition for 750 more to be self-sufficient rugby playing schools by the Rugby World Cup 2019, and to encourage new players to join local clubs.

This will be achieved by delivering a package of resource within the school, linked to the local club that helps it to start and sustain playing rugby union, including kit and equipment, as well as coaching and young leaders training.

Canterbury is the first partner to support All Schools, becoming the Official Partner for the programme. As part of its involvement, each school taking part in the initiative was given the opportunity to attend one of a number of Canterbury kit design workshops last year. The 100 participating state schools designed their own team rugby shirt, whilst learning about the core values of rugby, the pride associated with the shirt and the importance of colours, logos and emblems.

Canterbury has turned these drawings into final bespoke designs to be proudly worn by the school's rugby team. The colourful jerseys produced for the schools will be presented for the first time at Twickenham; they can be seen during Sunday's RBS 6 Nations England V Italy match as 100 children from across England will each be representing their school on the pitch before kick off as they flank the military bringing out the giant England shirt and at half time.

A St. James's Palace spokesperson, commented: "This patronage will allow Prince Harry to combine his passion for rugby with his work to help children and young people in society to build their skills, confidence and aspirations. Prince Harry recognises that rugby can play an important role in helping to achieve this."

Ian Ritchie, Chief Executive of the RFU, said: "We are delighted that Prince Harry and Canterbury have pledged their support for All Schools. It's an extremely important initiative for the RFU, and is already having a significant impact up and down the country. We know that both Prince Harry and the team at Canterbury share our aims to encourage more young people to play rugby and I look forward to us growing the game together."

Commenting on the announcement of Canterbury as Official Partner, CEO Chris Stephenson, said: "The RFU's All Schools is a fantastic programme which we are proud to support. The Canterbury kit design workshops present pupils with the unique opportunity to design their school kit, which they will later wear in action and with extra pride on the rugby pitch. The workshops offered a stimulating educational experience for those who may have little understanding of the traditional values of rugby and it was great to see the outcomes from all taking part."

All Schools forms one of the seven areas identified by the RFU to deliver the greatest participation legacy for the game in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup in 2015 and beyond. Secondary state schools have been selected in small clusters, allowing them to play rugby against each other locally. The RFU plans to take a school that is new to or has only just started to play rugby union, and turn it into a self-sufficient rugby playing school by the end of the three years providing a pipeline of players to the local rugby club.

A keen sportsman and rugby fan, Prince Harry is also Vice Patron of the RFU and Patron of the RFU Injured Players Foundation.

About Canterbury

Over 100 years ago, three men began making woolen garments in a small town on the South Island of New Zealand. John Lane, Pringle Walker and Alfred Rudkin were English natives who emigrated to Canterbury and named their new company after the local area. This was a brand rooted in the New Zealand soil. Like the Kiwi landscape itself, it was rugged and uncompromising.

Canterbury of New Zealand have made innovative rugby and sports clothing ever since.

Future Problem Solving Program International Announces Topic on International Women's Day

A Chinese saying, "Women hold up half the sky," was the inspiration for The Future Problem Solving Program International's selection of this year's topic to be used at their International Conference. FPSPI, an educational non-profit competition for students ages 10 and beyond, is announcing its topic for the International Conference on International Women's Day this year. International Women's Day was first observed in 1909, and in 1981 Congress established National Women's History Week to be commemorated the second week of March. Congress later expanded the week to a month. Events around the world will celebrate women's role in history and promote this year's theme, Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination:

Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Joining in this celebration, Future Problem Solving Program International chose March 8th, International Women's Day, to announce the International Conference topic, Global Status of Women, to their students.

Each year FPSPI students research and apply a problem solving process to a topic of international importance. At the conference students will address a futuristic scene relating to the Global Status of Women and develop a plan of action that will focus on opportunities for women world-wide while considering various governmental policies and the vast cultural and religious differences in attitudes towards women. This year's conference will welcome nearly 2,000 students from around the world at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, from June 6th through June 9th.

In addition to the Global Issues Problem Solvers who will be addressing the Global Status of Women, scenario writers will write futuristic stories projecting ideas about the topic into the future. All students who participate at the international level have competed on various other topics throughout the school year and have earned a place at the conference. The conference also features teams and individuals who have completed a year-long service project on a topic of their own choosing that aids their community, their nation, or the world in some way. These Community Problem Solvers also compete for top honors and will showcase their projects at a conference fair.

Future Problem Solving Program International was established in 1974 by Dr. E. Paul Torrance at the University of Georgia. It has since grown to include students from 42 states and 16 countries. It is difficult to say how many hundreds of thousands of students participate each year as the program reaches students who may be participating non-competitively in classrooms or after school programs using the materials to enhance curriculum, critical, and creative thinking. Future Problem Solving Program International may be contacted at their website http://www.fpspi.org or on Facebook.

Coventry University and Ingram collaborate on innovative textbook program for students

RINGWOOD, UNITED KINGDOM To ensure undergraduates get the best value for their money, first year students at Coventry University will have core textbooks and materials provided as part of their course fees in 2012 and 2013 through an innovative program developed between Coventry University and Ingram Content Group's UK library supply company.

The higher education system is undergoing unprecedented change, and this collaboration with Ingram demonstrates how were adapting to the developments so that the focus remains on whats best for our students, said Philip Vaughan, Assistant Director of Learning and Research at Coventry University. Coventry prides itself on being an innovative university, and initiatives like this are exactly the kind of innovations which places of learning should be embracing as the education landscape evolves and students expectations change.

Coventrys textbook program was developed in response to changes in the UK higher education system for 2012, which has seen undergraduates tuition fees rise. Working with Ingram, the University is providing core textbooks for the first year of students courses at no cost through the new program. Ingram is the supplier of print books.

The University continues to distribute textbooks to approximately 3,400 new undergraduates on campus, with Ingram and Coventry University staff working jointly on distribution.

The initial pilot phase of the project will be reviewed by the University and Ingram in early December, before the two organizations embark on a dedicated program for supplying textbooks to new students in both print and digital formats.

As institutions and their libraries create new business models in response to education reform, were pleased that our full range of content solutions, including our rich textbook offering, will provide students with the resources they need to succeed in school, said Dan Sheehan, Vice President & General Manager, Ingram Content Group library services. We look forward to our work with Coventry and putting the results of the pilot to good use, creating a program that benefits all.

Ingram continues to grow the number of libraries and institutions it works with in the region, supplying the main universities including Warwick University and Birmingham City University, along with the majority of colleges such as Henley College and Birmingham Metropolitan College.
