When he decided to go to law school, Sean Smallwood knew that it was for reasons that were far more important than just to try to make money. In college he was already offering his free time to organizations like the American Cancer Society, American Legion, and The Haitian Education Project just to mane a few.

His must notable volunteer activity, however, came when he got a call from the director of education for Lancaster Correctional Institution, a Florida youthful prison, asking if he wanted to be the key note speaker at the next high school graduation.

To some this may sound like no big deal, but to Attorney Smallwood this was a chance to reach pout to hundreds of children at one time to offer to them the positive role model that they have been needing their whole lives.

When Sean arrived at the prison he couldn't help but notice that the tall catch-wired fences seemed to go on for miles. "it was like a small fenced-in city" Smallwood said of the visit.

During his key note address Smallwood spoke to the young offenders about having a passion for life and how their experience in prison could be used as an advantage in school or work once they are released. "This experience can, if you let it, give you an ambition and a hunger to succeed and prosper that nobody out there will be able to compete with". Smallwood told the young prisoners.

After the ceremony, Smallwood was approached by many prisoners and their families regarding the inspirational words he shared.

"I think that for most of these kids this is their last chance to make any kind of meaningful change in their lives. Most of these guys will end up reoffending in a short time and go back to prison and by then it may be too late."

When asked if he would return to the prison to speak to the young prisoners Smallwood replied:
"I will definitely do this again and again if given the chance', the attorney said of his experience.
