Allergies Can Lead to Adverse Emotional Effects in Children

A study commissioned by pharmaceutical group Pharma Dynamics found that students experience negative emotional and psychological effects from allergies in addition to their physical symptoms. Researchers interviewed 800 students in schools across South Africa and observed increased levels of shyness, stress, self-consciousness, embarrassment, social isolation and difficulty coping with limitations brought on by allergies in the school environment.

Despite a wealth of research on childrens allergies, the psychological impact of this condition has been little studied or understood. According to Mariska Fouche, public affairs manager at Pharma dynamics, many students described the emotional and psychological impact of their allergies on their mental health and social lives as an aspect that is often overlooked in allergy management.

They described feeling embarrassed and self-conscious when people stared at the eczema on their arms and legs; hating looking gross and pale and not pretty; and feeling frustrated and unhappy about missing out on extracurricular activities with their peers. Others described their allergies to researchers as stressful, Fouche said.

Given the importance of self-esteem and peer acceptance in young people, allergies can be a major stumbling block to emotional and psychological well-being if they are not managed well, Fouche added.

The study also found, however, that many students were able to cope with their allergy symptoms when supported by the school and their families. Teachers and administrators can encourage students to report bullying. Parents should also be proactive in helping children understand their condition by providing them with information to prevent allergies and manage their symptoms when they occur.

Lettingweb addresses need for Edinburgh student accommodation

Another year of University League tables has seen Edinburgh once again perform well, with two institutions inside the Guardians Top 20 in the UK. That means that, once again, the capital will see a massive influx of students looking for places to stay.

Edinburghs major colleges: the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh Napier, and the Edinburgh College of Art are all home to 1000s of students. And after their first year (or before, especially for those that have arrived via clearing) the majority of students will leave halls and enter the Private Rental market for the first time.

Whilst Universities try to help students as much as they can, the time has come for the private rental sector to provide a service that is specific to students. With information, features and properties that are suited to them; Lettingwebs Student Hub is addressing that need directly.

It features:
  • Pages devoted to accommodation specific to the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh Napier University.
  • Information on Marchmont, Bruntsfield, Newington and all the other areas popular amongst Edinburghs students.
  • A student hub with useful advice and a Flatmate Ad board based on Twitter, find or advertise spare accommodation using #flatmate ads.

The best way to keep the content fresh and relevant to Ediburghs student populace is for everyone to get involved so Lettingweb are inviting Universities and charities with insight to contribute any information or ideas that they may have.

Steve Tigar, Lettingwebs Managing Director, commented:

Edinburgh is Lettingwebs home town, and a lot of our staff came through its various universities. They all helped to create a service that is informed and developed with Edinburghs students in mind, and they are all passionate about it growing into something thats really useful. Helping to make letting better in Scotland is our goal and I feel that this is a great way of achieving that.

Skillpad Releases The New GMP e-Learning Modules for the Nutraceutical Sector

Skillpad has recently introduced a range of new e-lessons applicable to the Nutraceutical sector.

The new e-lessons GMP - SOPs in Nutraceutical Manufacturing and GMP - Records in Nutraceutical Manufacturing are designed to meet critical training needs in the multi-billion dollar nutraceutical sector, which includes products such as dietary supplements and functional foods.

In the United States, the same strict GMP regulations that govern pharmaceutical manufacturers also apply to all companies that manufacture, package, label, or hold nutraceuticals or dietary supplements. A key requirement of these regulations (specified in 21 CFR Part 111) is for all personnel to be trained in the proper use of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and completion of records.

For the past 15 years Skillpad has been helping FDA-regulated companies to meet their training needs and is excited to announce the release of 2 new additions to its extensive library of e-Learning courseware.

Both e-Lessons are based on these regulations and are suitable for both 'on-boarding' of new hires and as refresher training material for existing employees.

Accessed via the Internet or your company's intranet/LMS, each e-Lesson is a rich multimedia learning experience that combines text, audio, graphics and animations to transfer critical knowledge in an engaging and interactive way.

Skillpad are providers of e-learning solutions for the Biopharma and regulated Industry including off-the-shelf and custom modules to help to increase productivity.

Boca Raton Family Law Attorney Spearheads Gifted Program for Students at Calusa Elementary

Jason A. Brodie, a respected family law attorney at the Boca Raton law firm of Brodie & Friedman, P.A., recently took action to initiate a gifted program for students who attend Calusa Elementary in Boca Raton, Florida. Previously, students who attended Calusa Elementary and qualified for the gifted program were sent to a different school to participate in the program.

As of August 2013, children who attend Calusa Elementary school and are entering kindergarten will be able to participate in the gifted program at their home school. Students who have already started the gifted program at Banyan Creek Elementary -- who are in grades 1 through 5 -- will continue participating in that program. If parents have a child already enrolled in the gifted program at Banyan Creek, they can choose to send their gifted kindergartener to the Banyan Creek program as well.

The gifted program will allow Calusa Elementary to further its vision statement, to "envision a school and community environment that fosters the appreciation of learning as a life long endeavor."

Australian Hairdressing Entrepreneur & Students Lead A New Wave Of Unusual Charity Projects

Hair Expo is a fantastic event for any hairdresser to attend. But this year, I wanted to concentrate my energies on a project that can make a difference on a global rather than national scale. No longer is charity limited to throwing money at a problem, particularly when it comes to supporting youth with life skills. Sure money can be used to build centres or run a soup kitchen for a couple of months, but that doesnt solve the root of the problem. You need to teach young people, particularly in impoverished nations, to help themselves, says Bernie Craven, Online Hairdressing Training Entrepreneur and Organic Hair Salon owner.
So much money is being thrown into traditional charity projects, but I didnt want my money to just disappear into that giant pit, says Bernie. I wanted, like many other people I know, to see the difference actually being made, to see where the aid was going. Then last year I saw an article about a group out at University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) sourcing sponsorship and in-kind support to implement hairdressing training in Manila in the Philippines. This was it! This was how it should be done, by supporting youth with skills for life and mentoring.
So Bernie, a hairdressing training professional for over 20 years, joined forces with Enactus USC students to aid the Kuya Centre for Street Kids in Manila, in this revolutionary way. The purpose of the centre is to provide shelter for children abandoned in poverty, with the hope of reuniting these children with their families and then helping the poverty stricken families create income and become sustainable through programmes like sewing training, and now hairdressing. In July, the students and Bernie will go to Quezon City, Manila, where the excited team are able to use their professional skills to make a difference in less fortunate lives.
If you want to start a different kind of project there are several things you need to consider. People dont just want to donate money; they also want to donate materials. In Manila, Bernie and the USC students will be working with at least 20 students, so they needed scissors, combs, capes, water sprays, freight costs and more.
The internet is the key to drumming up support, says Craven, who two years ago sold his bricks & mortar salon in Caloundra, to develop Aussie Hair Guru, an online training website for hairdressers. Back in 2011 I saw just where business and charity had to go. Online! The basic premise for Aussie Hair Guru was to make training accessible via the internet to anyone who loves hair worldwide. No one has infinite pockets, but training is vital to being able to make a living. Thats what Im about with Aussie Hair Guru, and thats what Im about with this project.
Bernie used industry Facebook pages, blog sites, and called on a few connections, and the big-hearted hairdressing industry responded, helping the team procure all the hairdressing equipment needed. When you do things differently, it is amazing how people respond. Giving people something tangible to donate to is whats needed in the crowded charity sector. Picking which cause to give your money to is hard, thats why we make it easy by showing exactly where the money is going. Well be posting photographs and videos during and after the projects completion.
However, more help is needed and theres still plenty of fundraising to do, the Kuya Collaborative is completely not-for-profit and relies on support of local, national and international communities. Bernie will be donating 50% of the sales from hairdresser memberships at his website www.aussiehairguru.com until the 6th July and $50 per new client at his new Boutique Organic salon on the Sunshine Coast www.aussiehairgurusalons.com.au, allowing people to receive something of value and be a part of a great cause at the same time. For more information about Kuya Collaborative fundraising events go to facebook.com/kuyacollaborative or kuya@enactususc.org .
